BALLROOM DANCE INSTRUCTOR : HOW TO
The Beginning …
Well.. I didn’t just wake up one day and magically become a ballroom Instructor right? Come on.. I’ve always been good.. but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Starting dance at the age of eight in classes including ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, you know; the usual as a child, until I turned eleven. When you get in big trouble at school and your life revolves around dance, that was the most prominent punishment to have it taken away. Later, I continued dancing on and off until my sophomore year in high school where it then became consistent again. Thankfully, Dancing became my life once more.
Leaving high school I was awarded a dance scholarship to Grand Canyon University. Being in the dance education program allowed me to meet many beautiful, talented, and inspiring dancers that became some of my closest friends.
How Did I Become a Ballroom Dance Instructor?
My friend Cori came to dinner one night with a binder that she was very determined on studying and downloading into her system. She explained to me that she was training at Fred Astaire Dance Studio to become a ballroom dance instructor. Ballroom dance was something I had always been extremely interested in doing myself since I was a kid. So, I asked questions, got her thoughts, and she told me that I should apply so we could work together. Instantly I went and found the ad and messaged the Director hoping to get an interview in return. Success.
After a successful interview and going through eight weeks of training with Cori. Both of us were offered full time careers as professional instructors. The happiest girl on the earth was screaming inside. This was my dream job and I could not be more excited for every part of all the new adventures.
The Next Steps
During my career at Fred Astaire I instructed many wonderful students, couples, and children. I was trained and competed as a professional. I won a handful of awards throughout my time. Progressively I also became the training specialist, ran the front desk administrative tasks, and finally the studio manager. Three years was spent working for Fred Astaire Dance Studio before I decided it was time for us to part ways.
Continuing school in a different field is when I began teaching dance again on the side. Previous students reached out and asked for my service to continue in their home. Eternally grateful to them for giving me the idea to start my own business as a contracted, mobile, dance instructor. They also gave me the confidence that I needed in order to succeed. Thank you to the Blacks’.
